How to read these numbers

These are self-reported estimates of time saved on specific tasks, gathered from participants after they had been trained and had used the tools in their own work. They are not a measure of organisation-wide productivity, and they should not be read as one. A team that saves 82% of the time it spends on a compliance check has not become 82% more productive overall; it has freed capacity on one class of work.

The pattern is more useful than any single number. Savings are highest where work is structured, high volume and text heavy, and lowest where work depends on judgement, relationships and context that sits outside any document. That ordering has held consistently across banking, government, education, professional services and FMCG.

Why compliance sits at the top

Why does compliance work show the largest AI time saving?

It is high volume, heavily structured, and the source material is already written down. That is the shape of work current AI tools handle best.

Compliance work tends to involve checking material against a known standard, summarising it, and recording the result. The inputs are documents, the rules are explicit, and the output is a written judgement against those rules. Everything about that shape suits current tools.

It is also the area where the time saving is least likely to be the point. Faster compliance checking is only worth having if the checking is still correct, which is why the boundary around sensitive information and a named human owner for the decision matter more here than anywhere else on this list.

Why decision making sits at the bottom

Business decision making shows the smallest saving at 45%, and that is the healthiest number in the table. Decisions carry accountability. They depend on context that is rarely written down anywhere a tool can reach: what a client said on a call, what the board will tolerate, what happened the last time someone tried this.

Where AI helps at this end of the range, it helps with the preparation rather than the call: assembling the options, pressure testing an argument, drafting the paper. The judgement stays human, and responsible AI practice says it should.

Methodology and limitations

  • Source: participants in AI Innovisory training workshops and consulting engagements with New Zealand organisations, collected since 2023.
  • Sectors represented: banking, government, education, professional services and FMCG.
  • Basis: self-reported estimates of time saved on the named tasks, given after training and after using the tools in the participant's own work.
  • Self-report is the main limitation. These figures record what practitioners believe they saved. They are not stopwatch measurements, and perceived savings tend to run ahead of measured ones.
  • Individual results vary by team, by tool, and above all by how the process worked beforehand. A team with a slow manual process will show a larger saving than one that had already optimised it.
  • Not a controlled study. There is no control group and no random assignment. Treat this as practitioner evidence about where AI helps most, not as a causal estimate of productivity gain.
